What center fire pistol/handgun calibers has the same or less range as a .22lr rifle?
Q. Where I shoot I can generally only shoot a .22lr rifle because of a range to house issue, but I was just wondering what, if any, handgun round(s) can go about as far as a .22lr bullet. I'm not talking a 45 degree angle but I'd rather not take any chances. Also if barrel length counts for anything the gun I would get would be at least a 5-6 inch barrel.

A. um, probably .25acp, .32 acp, .380 auto, 9x18 Mak, 32 S&W, 32 S&W L, and some light .38 special. shooting about 50 yards with those is pretty much the maximum effective limit. most .22LR round has probably a 50 yard effective range limit unless you have excellent shot placement.

Can i put CCI CB Longs into my Remington 597 .22lr and also somemore .22lr questions?
Q. Can i fire these rounds safely in my Remington 597??? also in long bullets isn't their less powder than in LR? and finally what are your favorite .22lr subsonic rounds?
Asked by Chris - Tue Apr 26 18:34:11 2011 - Hunting - 2 Answers - Comments

A. CCI CB longs should cycle through your rifle just fine manually, but probably will not have enough energy to operate the bolt and chamber the next round. Worst case the mechanism will partially operate and the empty shell will jam the action. I keep a brick of Calibre .22 gallery loads for in town varmint control. Put down a wood rat with them once, but it took five shots to do it. With these sub velocity rounds in long barreled rifles you must be very careful to make sure the bullet leaves the barrel and is not lodged near the muzzle. Firing the next round with a plugged barrel is not something you ever want to experience.

What would I do with a .22lr rifle that I should or shouldn't do with a Varmint rifle?
Q. Okay I know theres an assortment of calibers for Varmint rifles but I don't know very much about them & have no idea why I may want to opt for buying one over a .22lr! So could anyone enlighten me on their intended uses and practicality in comparison to a 22?
Asked by myugenjin - Tue Apr 12 19:30:50 2011 - Hunting - 7 Answers - Comments

A. The Varmint Rifle is more powerful but its slower and has a much greater kickback. If your a rookie you should use the .22. Its very quiet, no kickback, and it gets the job done. :P

Is it more appropriate to get a 10 year old a 1,000 fps break barrel air gun or 22lr autoloader?
Q. I'm afraid other children may ridicule him if he had something like an air rifle, but maybe he should be 12 when I get him a 22. Any ideas. Thanks.
Asked by Bobber Gang - Sun Dec 13 17:57:48 2009 - Hunting - 10 Answers - Comments

A. This is how I would handle it. Get your 10 year old a simple air rifle. Something in the 750 fps range. Once they can demonstrate that they can handle this gun in a safe manner, they should be able to use it on their own, without adult supervision. ALSO buy them a 22 bolt action rifle. This will be something that they can only use under adult supervision. Say, once every other month you can take them out to shoot 50 rounds of cheap ammo at paper targets and tin cans.

What are the shotguns called that have like a 12 gauge shotgun at the bottom and like a .22lr at the top?
Q. It has a shotgun and rifle combined. I guess so when you hit the deer or whatever with the shotgun you get up close and finish it off with the small rifle.
Asked by Larry D - Mon Sep 29 14:11:35 2008 - Hunting - 6 Answers - Comments

A. I've always heard that called an "over/under" gun. Usually has a .22lr or .223 on top, and a 12 gauge on the bottom.

What ammunition is the best for .22lr Winchester Wildcat?
Q. What kind ammunition is the best and safe for targeting shooting 50yrd with Winchester Wildcat .22lr I am novice shooter and it's my first rifle. I am just learning from experienced shooters.
Asked by Toyota - Tue Dec 14 10:50:26 2010 - Hunting - 5 Answers - Comments

A. Any ammo labeled .22 long rifle should function and be safe in your rilfe. You might as well start out with trying the cheap stuff. Quite a few people do have trouble with the cheap Remington stuff. I like the Federal .22 lr.ammo. I believe Winchester is decent .22 lr ammo. If you don't like how a particular brand/bullet weight performs with the rifle, try something different. The CCI is good ammo but quite a bit more expensive.

A. There are more 22lr weapons on the market than any other caliber. The Remington 597 has tacicool stuff available.

What is the recoil like on a .22lr derringer?
Q. I have no problem with 9mm pistols and even .357 mag revolvers. How different is the .22lr in such a tiny gun? *** Also what is the best maker of those small .22lr two barrel derringers? I am looking to spend about $150-$200 NO... I would not use this for defense, I am planning on carrying a Taurus PT-111 for that. This is just for fun.
Asked by Jenny Bomb - Mon Jul 19 12:37:16 2010 - Hunting - 9 Answers - Comments

A. There is no recoil. Don't let these characters kid you. I bought a Davis 22WMR chrome plated derringer about 30 years ago, and still don't really know why. Its been sitting in my safe collecting dust. Every once in a giggle I take it out and shoot it. I can't hit a darned thing with it, and I look silly as hell, too. Its got those fake pearl grips on it. Patton said that only a pimp from a cheap New Orleans whore house would carry a gun with pearl grips. LOL. I paid under 50 bucks for it, and that was too much money. Next time there's one of those gun buybacks for 100 bucks, its gone. And oh, by the way, Henry Deringer designed it, but its still spelled derringer. Save your money. You'll have it for about 5 minutes before you start to… [cont.]

Is a soft oak tree a good backstop for a 22lr?
Q. Shooting at about 40 yards out? There is still nothing behind this tree for a good 1/2 a mile also and I am also shooting at a downward angle. Thanks. And I don't care about the tree since it is already dieing and I have chopped up logs on both sides in case one goes haywire.
Asked by Adam - Sun Apr 18 18:05:58 2010 - Hunting - 4 Answers - Comments

A. The target, even if impenetrable, does NOT count as the backstop. The hill of dirt that is significantly wider and higher than the target does. You must have a safe backstop behind your target or you will have trouble and give shooters a bad name.

What is the cheapest caliber of ammo besides the 22lr?
Q. I want to do some plinking but want a little more power than the 22lr. What is my next best option? Oh, and it has to be cheap!!!
Asked by joe - Wed Nov 19 22:47:09 2008 - Hunting - 11 Answers - Comments

A. the cheapest now and has been for a long time is surplus 7.62x54r. This is the round that the mosin nagants, svt-40, and the svd's shoot. You can get 440 rounds for $49.00. That comes out to about $2.25 a box of 20. After that would be the 7.62x39.

A. Some .22's tend to be picky about, both for accuracy and feed. The suggestion of the CCI standard velocity is one I'd agree with and it runs and groups well in all of my .22's. (Beretta 87T, Benelli MP95 and a Pardini SP) Further a friend of mine who also runs a Buckmark feeds that through hers almost exclusively because it is quite picky. I've had pretty good luck with Remington standard velocity target as well as the Eley Match. I'd suggesting getting a boxes of a few different types and trying them off of a sandbag at your range. Q. I was just wondering where I could find a replacement gun stock for a Savage Arms model 64F Semi-Auto .22lr rifle?

A. As far as I know there aren't a lot of aftermarket stocks for the Savage 64. I did a quick search and didn't see anything that looked promising. If your stock is damaged, you could call Savage and see if they will sell you a replacement.

A. I have a Ruger 44 mag carbine which goes along with my 44 mag super blackhawk for versatility the only downside is that the carbine won't shoot 44 special like the revolver...very cheap if you handload.and at 100 yds,the carbine is a good deer gun ify for larger...unless you put um where they belong.

A. You can drop it from waist high and it can explode, but it won't explode with enough force to harm anyone. That happened to me at the range a few weeks ago.

Does anybody know if they make an in-chamber 22lr laser bore sight?
Q. I have looked on google, Gander Mountain, dicks sporting goods, and cabala's and can't find a thing for an in-chamber laser bore sight, do these even exist? The closest I found was a 17 hrm, so i figured they might have 22lr. I am aware that Aimshot makes one in 17HMR, s I wouldn't think that it would be harder to shove a laser into a 22 than that.
Asked by Steven - Mon Sep 6 10:30:34 2010 - Hunting - 2 Answers - Comments

A. It appears that the designers have not figured out how to get a laser module and a battery into a package that small. There are boresighters that fit into the muzzle.
