American Family Structure

The American family structure is considered a traditional family support system involving two married individuals providing care and stability for their biological offspring. However, this two-parent, nuclear family has become less prevalent, and alternative family forms have become more common. The family is created at birth and establishes ties across generations. Those generations, the extended family of aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins, can hold significant emotional and economic roles for the nuclear family. Over time, the traditional structure has had to adapt to very influential changes, including divorce and the introduction of single-parent families, teenage pregnancy and unwed mothers, homosexuality and same-sex marriage, and increased interest in adoption. Social movements such as the feminist movement and the stay-at-home dad have contributed to the creation of alternative family forms, generating new controversy and concern for the American family. I realize not everyone has a messed up family, but is it becoming normal for people in American society to not be able to depend on their families for support anymore? Both of my parents were let down by their families. My mom came from a verbally abusive family and when she was 18 she moved all the way across the US with nothing but the clothes on her back. My dad came from a large family who always made him buy them cigarettes and candy with his own paycheck. Both of my parents knew that they did not like/want a family like that and they raised my brother and I with great morals and family traditions. I think that although a lot of people are abandoned by their families, or not supported emotionally or financially they are still capable of becoming great, hard-working members of this society.
